  Search RENTNET® to find your perfect place!
  If moving, get a sense of the market you're moving to by using our rent calculator to tell you what your current apartment would go for in your destination city.
  Get the scoop on apartment listing lingo by reading our Apartment Hunter's Glossary.
  Learn about a renter's obligations when moving out.
  Create a "Move" file to store receipts and records, and keep it handy!
  Find out which moving expenses are tax-deductible.
  Contact moving companies and truck rental companies for estimates and moving assistance information. Tip: Reserve well in advance as companies are often sold out for key move weekends.
  Getting renter's insurance will ensure coverage before, during and after the move.

7 weeks

  Be prepared-obtain a current credit report to give potential landlords.
  Learn how to fight for the perfect apartment -- create a Renter's Resume and Pet Resume to present your case and win-over potential landlords.
  Obtain local information about your new city.
  Research child care options in your new location.
  Find out about schools in your new city.

6 weeks

  Notify physicians and dentist of your move, and ask for referrals.
  Make check-up appointment for pets. Obtain a copy of your pet's records and get new tags (if necessary). See Pets section and check with your vet for vaccination requirements in your new location.
  Take an objective look at what you own and figure out what goes with you, gets left behind or goes into storage. Most moving companies have a minimum weight restriction. Above the minimum, more weight means more cost.
  Contact any clubs or associations for information on transferring, selling or ending memberships.

5 weeks

  Check out auto insurance rates in your new location. Do some comparison shopping if you're considering a new car.
  Check into storage options. Sign up for a free personal Storage Agent who can do the research.
  Start collecting boxes and packing materials. Call truck rental companies or moving companies to order supplies.

4 weeks
Done Task
  Give notice to your current landlord or management company.
  Cancel any monthly services. Many require at least 30 days notice or you will be billed for an extra month.
  Before you move--clear out the clutter. Auction off items. Have a yard sale, and set aside donation items.
  Have a BBQ to use up perishables, flammables and open liquor bottles. Note: Movers will not move combustible or flammable materials, or open liquor bottles.
  Arrange for transfer of school records for yourself or children.
  Start touring potential properties. Bring the Apartment Inspection Checklist to help you in your decision-making process.
  Start involving your kids in the move. Make it exciting by having your kids pack some of their own things, and letting them figure out new layouts for their rooms.
  Check on special transportation requirements for moving pets.
  Visit our Autos section for advice on moving your car.
  Sign up for free address change service with RENTNET®. Notify the post office, insurance company, credit card companies and other important businesses about your new location.
  Sign a lease or rental agreement for a new property.

3 weeks

  Start packing, remembering to label your boxes so you can unpack with ease. Plan on carrying irreplaceable and hard-to-replace items with you (jewelry, photos, home videos, etc). Some state laws prohibit the moving of houseplants-consider giving your plants to friends or family.
  Arrange for utilities at your new location. Check out our Utilities section.
  Check to make sure you have returned all rented videos and library books.
  Check dry cleaners, storage facilities and repair shops for personal articles.
  Give forwarding address to old employer, lawyer, accountant, etc.
  Service your car, especially if you're using it for the move.

2 weeks
Done Task
  Make lodging arrangements if traveling a long distance or if your new residence is not in move-in condition.
  Verify move-in date with new landlord.
  If you are moving from a high rise, you may need to reserve an elevator for moving day.
  Update e-mail address, if necessary. Let your online friends and contacts know.
  Use RENTNET® customized Address Card to notify friends, family members, organizations and clubs of your new address.
  If you have young children, arrange for a babysitter on moving day. You can concentrate on the move knowing your kids are watched and safely out of the way.

1 week
Done Task
  Close or transfer bank account, and get traveler's checks if needed. Clear out your safety deposit box as well. Make sure you have money to pay movers. (Some companies accept only cash.)
  Notify the post office, and your insurance and credit card companies of your move if you haven't yet. Use our free address change service now.
  Clean your apartment thoroughly, or arrange for house cleaning after you move.
  Make item donations. Remember to collect receipts for tax purposes.
  Back up your computer files before dissembling and packing your system.
  Contact utilities to cancel or transfer accounts. You'll want utilities on moving day, so arrange to disconnect them after your move date.

Moving Week

  De-frost and clean your refrigerator and freezer; clean your stove.
  Confirm your new address with the moving company.
  Finish packing and labeling your boxes.

Moving Day
Done Task
  Do a final walk-through of your old residence, checking closets, drawers, etc. Turn off all lights, lock all doors and windows, and leave keys with your old property manager if applicable.
  Pick up your rental truck if available. Most truck companies have pads, dollies, and last-minute packing materials available for rent or purchase.
  Be available when the moving truck arrives. Make sure all your boxes have arrived undamaged before signing paperwork and letting movers leave. See our Moving Company section.

Settling In

  Update your car registration and driver's license.
  Find great savings in your neighborhood.
  Make a moving-in shopping list.
  Test security and smoke alarms.
  Post local emergency numbers.
  Recycle or store moving boxes.
  Subscribe to the local newspaper.
  Connect your utilities.
  Send in claims for damages that occurred during the move.
  Enroll children in schools. Learn how to choose the right schools.
  Throw a house warming party.
  Learn how to decorate your new place by reusing your old furniture and decor.
  Keep in touch with friends and family.
  Meet new people, make new friends!
